1 1/2" is plenty unless you want more coolant volume. Then is you use used hoses 1 1/2 and 1 3/4 seem to be the most popular. We bought ours at Auto Value have many different lengths

oh yeah..if they aren't in stock you can order them and have them the next day usually...don't forget you can get the ends different sizes so don't stress about it not being the same.

If you know someone with an account with US Tire and Exhaust, you can get 10' lengths of aluminized exhaust tubing for pretty cheap. (around 10 to 15 bucks)
Or you can walk into pretty much any parts store and tell them to order what you want from US Tire, but you'll have to pay their markup. Expect to pay right about 20 bucks a stick going through a parts store.
I measured the sizes of my upper and lower hoses, and ordered pipe to fit inside them. In my case, 1-1/2" and 2" for the lower.
I made a plan on how I wanted to run the lines, then went to the parts store and found some hoses with the right bends.

Iv'e built quite a few trucks with a rear rad. setup. I use 1-1/2 off the thermostat housing and 1-3/4 coming off the water pump. Aluminized exhuast pipe works great. I took apart a truck that had aluminized pipe on it for 8 years and it had just a small amount of surface rust right around the hose area and no rust anywhere else.
