Here is a simple 'how to' on installing DIY4X's rockwell pinion brakes.

Find them HERE: http://www.diy4x.com/brakes.htm

It's a pretty easy install, but it took me a few minutes to figure out exactly how it was supposed to go together. Maybe this will save some of you some head scratching.

So here goes!

Tools needed:
1-1/2" socket
3/4" socket and wrench (or two sockets)
1/2" socket and wrench (or two sockets)
DIY4X supplies all grade 8 hardware needed.

You will also need:
Two RIGHT SIDE front calipers for a 1987 1/2 4x2 chev pickup. Cardone part #15-4122
A good set of pads, I recommend Performance Friction carbon metallics. Part #0052.20

First, remove the pinion nut and washer, and remove the pinion flange.

Remove the 6 bolts holding the bearing cap in place, leave the cap there, it doesn't need to come off.

Bolt the caliper bracket in place with the supplied longer bolts. It's hard to see, but the six bolts aren't evenly spaced. The bracket with caliper in it will fit in only one position; 30 degrees left of center, pointing to the short side of the axle.

Attach the rotor to the mid plate with the 8 supplied 1/4-20 bolts, as seen in the pic below.

The mid plate is held to the pinion flange by the 4 flange bolts, DIY4X supplies longer grade 8 hardware so you can bolt your driveshaft flange on with the same 4 bolts.

Then, mount your caliper and pads, run your lines, and your set to go!

Sweet:D I wasn't going to buy these when he told me there was only one position for clocking because it would interfere with my steering ram/lines. He neglected to mention that I could install it on the shaft end. Thanks Soylent.

One question: I can't tell if the caliper is fixed or floating type? Looks like a floater, but I can't see how it will move/float?:homes:

The caliper is a floater, the holes in the bracket are threaded to accept the OE slide pin.

Most pinion brake kits I found when I was looking were of a similar style. Though the finish of the DIY4X kit is not as fancy as the OEM setup, the dramatic price difference sealed the deal for me.

Finally got the truck out and tested the brakes, they work awesome! Good enough to lock up my 47's anywhere I wanted!
