Figured I'd start up a thread on my truck. A couple weeks ago I finally got around to tearing apart my 454. Here's a few pics I took.

This how my 454 looked when I brought it home. Paid $600 for it, a new Crane Cams camshaft, a good used rolling assembly for it and a few other misc things.

Got told that the timing chain was broke when I got it, but as you can see it's still there.

Those pieces sitting on top of the oil pump are whats left of the rod bearings. Good thing I got the rolling assembly.

Thats the number 3 rod bearings coming out to say hi! Not good!

This is how the engine is sitting right now. It's fully tore apart except for a couple of oil galley plugs I couldn't get out. Now I got to get it to the machine shop. I plan on getting it hot tanked, line bored, decked (I believe thats what its called, make sure the mating surface where the heads and engine meet are flat and level), get new cam bearings installed, have my replacement crank inspected and get the valve seats ground. I plan on doing a basic port job on the heads myself. If there is anything else that would be good idea to have the machine shop do, let me know. I'm new at building engines and want to make sure it's done right. It's probably gonna be a little while before I get it done due to lacking funds, but at least I'm started.

Also here is the custom tips I made for my stacks. Took me about 9hrs for both.

Thanks for the info Twisted. The cheaper I can make this trip, the better. I just found out a way to check the flatness myself that involves a machinists level and a feeler gauge. Doesn't hurt to check it if I can do it for free. It also make me feel like I accomplished something while I build my funds.:D

Thanks UFO, I wasn't sure. I doubt I'll be there. Little bit of a drive. If it was closer I'd be there in a heartbeat.

Got started making a grill this weekend.

This what I got to work with to make it. 1" square tube of various lengths. Got it for free from my dad.

The basic design I'm going with.
http://i640.photobucket.com/albums/uu122/sabicp/DSCF0103.jpg
This a template I drew out on tag board. Anywhere the flame isn't, the metal will be recessed 1/2". That is where this is gonna get interesting and time consuming. I'm not sure if it's gonna work, but I'm gonna find out.

That's gonna be a lot of cutting and grinding!

Tell me about it. I started a little bit to find out how long this is gonna take. Easy work, but it's gonna take all my patience to finish it.

After you're done, you should try your hand at chainmaile!

Got the motor hauled off to the machine shop this morning. He said he should be getting to it at the end of next week or beginning of the following week. Not sure what this is gonna run me yet, but I'm guessing around $1,000 from the numbers he gave me. He's a little higher priced then some of the other shops I priced, but I have yet to hear anything bad about him. Quality cost money. At least I know it's in good hands.

What kind of horsepower are shooting for, if any?

I'm not exactly sure what I'm gonna get out of it. I'm currently running a basically stock 350, so I'd be happy with stock 454 numbers(For now). It's getting bored 30 over, domed pistons to increase to 9:1 compression, mild cam, and a basic port job. So whatever I get for horsepower increase I'll be happy with.

Scored this today from Highboy.
Dana 60 front, 14 bolt rear 4.56 gears and a 4-6 inch lift. This should do my truck good.:D

Talked to the machinist earlier this week. He's slowly getting it cleaned and inspected. He said he'd call me this week with a labor estimate. When I know that number then I'll decide on what parts I'll upgrade. As of right now It's getting bored, line bored(Main bearing did spin), swapping to 049 heads, new valves and springs, complete valve job, ARP main studs, domed pistons, and ported(by me). Don't know about the crank yet, it wasn't finished being checked. So far everything is looking good.:cool:

Im not really sure what I'll be putting out yet. If I remember right the factory hp was around 310. Im hoping to hit the 400 mark. The machinist does have a dyno, so I might have him run it on that and find out. Right now Im more concerned with just getting a running motor in the truck though. Down the road when my bank book is a little bigger I'm hoping to push it to about 700hp.

Figured I'd give you guys an update. Currently the motor build is being put on hold. I'm trying to get a few bills paid off so I have more money to play with. Should be getting continued late winter/early spring.
Did get a labor quote. My original guess was a little off, but oh well, it's only money.:D I didn't realize some of small things that add up. I'm looking at closer to $2000.
Now for better news. We started talking numbers and parts. Nothing got officially decided on yet, but I think i'm ditching the stock heads and going with a set of Brodix Race-Rite heads. More money, but I' think I'll be alot happier. Especially after I was told that switching the heads and matching up the parts could put me at 600HP or at least close to that. MMMMMM....stock 350 to 550-600HP 454...MMMMM Next year could be quite interesting:bat:
