View Full Version : My new truck
Just picked up a 99 Dodge Ram with a 6 inch lift and 315 Nitto Terra Grapplers that are almost new and ION rims on it. I am happy as hell always thought the Rams looked neat lifted with bigger tires on it. This truck will only be a tow rig or DD. It needs some work and a tranny but I don't think it was to bad of a deal. Post some pics later. Now I need to go figure out where to put my MNMud Sticker.

I have a dodge like that to, but your's is nicer. Pretty nice ride man. It should work good for you, mine has the 360 to and over 200,000 miles and I pull my mudtruck, 4wheeler and other stuff behind it. Not the fastest hotrod for the job but it will get it done.

sweet truck so is this going to be your dd
Thanks for the compliments it does need it share of work to it it will be my DD (if the wife doesnt steal it 1st) I have a friend who is going to help me with some rust repair and a dent in the box now front bumper is cracked to hell missing a fog light. I just need to track down a tranny or someone to rebuild it. It has no 2nd gear needs some front end work and a u joint in the drivers side axle. One of the neat things it has is a dvd player in the stereo and some sort of picture device it has a spot to put in your card from your camera. Leather interior which with my kids I wouldnt have anything else.

I had a 97 sport it had 3.73
the trannys done in it. now when I feel better I need to get it home and replace the front output bearing on the t-case then the u joint in the front shaft
got there and decided to let him do the front axle work but I still am going to do the transfer case work
man do I feel like S**T

3.55 I think is the standard gear ratio
So the tranny shop calls today to say that the truck is done which he said Friday so it was a surprise to hear from him. So tomarrow I will have my truck back BUT now the guy says something looked funny with the pinion gear and or bearing but after looking at it he couldnt find anything wrong so he put it back together. Then he mentions that something looked funny on the drivers side of the axle like the balljoints were wrong or something so he looked at it and said that the balljoint on the drivers side looks to be higher than the pass side then after looking more he said it looked like the flanges on the tube almost looked bent upwards but in his words it worked once it will work again. My only worry is that this thing is going to eat up tires but I guess I will give it a shot and go from there.

wouldn't hurt to have a good alinment shop look at it. If the truck looks like its been beaten on I'd rather spend money now to prevent a disaster then to have a disaster and cost even more
I am going to check out all the tie rods and see if anything needs to be replaced since the ball joints are good and take it to a alignment shop i dont want to be buying them tire$

nice
So I pulled the T-Case out tonite I need a job working on these t-cases that would be a gravy job. Anyways doesnt look too bad needs the front output bearing, rear bushing, possibly a chain, some seals, and the usual snap rings. Other than that it is really clean the forks are all good and sliders are good the planetary spins smoothly the plastic washers dont have steel wore in them looks really good inside other that the front case has been welded up. The only thing that some one f'd up on is that they didn't throw a magnet back in it when they put it together. So hopefully tomorrow I will get to the parts store and put it back together. So that will leave me with some U-Joints on the driveshafts and figuring why it idles crappy sometimes I am hoping that is a TBI gasket but I doubt it. If any one has any pointers on this I would appriciate it when it idles for a while it will idle low 500-600 range sometimes it will do it when you are waiting at a lite when you take off it will pop through the TB. I have sprayed carb cleaner at the gasket and it idled up a bit (when it was idling low) but I couldnt tell if it was because I sprayed the gasket or if it was the sensor on the drivers side of the intake that did it. Anyways thanks again in advance for any suggestions.
AND it is throwing a engine lite also when the vehicle is warmed up like after driving it for 15 minutes and not stopping it doesnt seem to do it.
Ladies and Gents I am finally done with all of my drivetrain popped the T-case back in this after noon and doing the front driveshaft tonite. Now the rest awaits :{ Does anyone know if the ball in the knuckle on the front shaft can be rebuilt or replaced? or any maintenence is necessary?

how do you like your new truck so far
As far as I know I still like it but havent been driving it. Its been either in the tranny shop or my shop getting fixed. Now I need to address hopefully just a dirty air intake sensor or throttle position sensor. What I have driven of it I love it I always have been a fan of lifted Dodges. I have almost bought a couple now but could never bring myself to own one being a Chevy guy (mainly just for the parts availability that I have) But Ive got one now and when its done it should be a fairly reliable rig. Now I just have to get the wife off my arse to get the body work done.

I would definitely have it checked out. Those Dodge fronts are notorious for bending.

Where could I get it checked a frame shop? Maybe I will hurry up my search for 60's if I win the lotto.
More good news I smashed up the Drivers side box in the rear and took out the tail lite woo f'n hoo. Then after a sh**ty weekend I figured I would drop it off at the alignment shop this morning so I can finally quit wearing out my front tires but that backfired also. The guy who did my front axle shaft was supposed to check the balljoints on both sides, well low and behold the balljoints are shot on the side he did. Hard to believe that 1,000 miles would trash both upper and lower. Than the a-hole who lifted my truck cheaped out and didn't put the extended sway bar links in it so thats all f'ed. So how difficult is a balljoint job on this beast?

balljoints arnt too bad on them tiny. just a pain in the ass. i've had that problem with my d44 fronts with the alignment man telling me they are bent. pick up a set of adjustable ball joints and that solved most of my problem. i don't really think they are bent because ALOT of dodges front axles look like that. one bad thing about these ball joints is that they sometimes like to fall out of the knuckle they sit in. tack welded them in 4 points on the upper ball joint and that problem dissappeard along with the tires wearing so fast. as for the front cardigan driveshaft rebuilding i heard from people that it's better to leave that peice to the shop or grab a new shaft from the junkyard.
quit beating on you're daily driver. trannys are expensive. mind if i ask how much you paid for the rebuild? did you find out the engine problem?
Where did you find the adjustable ball joints at? I would have to check on the rebuild cost I want to say around $12-1400. The front driveshaft I had a driveshaft place replace the cardigan joint for $50 and they pressed in my other joints. That was a bit more than I wanted to spend but I didnt want to f it up. As far as the engine problem I am thinking it is a TPS sensor cause its shifting kinda weird. Havent had much time yet and since it warmed up it hasnt been acting as bad with the idling issue. As of right now I am kicking myself in the nuts for smashing the box. I called the insurance on how much my plan would go up and its not as bad as you would think ends up being a penalty for 3 years at a total of $170 when its all said and done now if I can come up with the $500 deductable.

i forget where i got those adjustable ball joints but if i had to guess it would be Napa? i think you're probly in the right direction as far as TPS or the CPS. try cleaning the throttle body out, or some sea foam everywhere. that sounds like a very reasonable price on the rebuild. i usually get screwed with the 2G bill. but i just found out after labor day last year my cousin can do them for me for $900. but next time i think he is going to teach me how to rebuild it myself.
I was on a bunch of Dodge forums and theysaid also to clean the TB holy $hit hard to imagine how dirty it was I also tried to clean the sensors which were dirty. I didnt have the balls to drill out the TPS sensor and spray it out with elec cleaner I was pretty sure I would drill to far and wreck it so I will just replace it. I figure if I can still drive it I best leave it alone till I can replace it. The tranny rebuild was dropping it off and them doing all the work I went that route so if something happened I didnt get crap for putting it in wrong or something. They also flushed the cooler and replaces a line for me too. Figure if I gotta pay I might as well not have to do it again in a month or two.
So heres the balljoint like Mr. dodge was saying and for **** sake how damn bugered is this thing man I am getting sick of all these suprises. Welded the shaft on the box to the steering shaft now its not even good for a core damnit. Scrap yard here I come I wonder how much I can expect to be bent over for that.
