View Full Version : 1974 Trans Am Rebuild

I've actually been working on this for a few years... but I'm going to start making some forward progress in the next few weeks, so I figured I'd make a build thread to catalog everything.

To start with. I purchased a 1974 Pontiac Trans Am in the spring of 1997. It was actually the week I graduated that I got it. It was a 400CI, 4 speed Muncie, with the functional shaker hood. This was the newest Trans Am I would have bought, as they installed catalytic converters starting in 1975. It had about 50,000 original miles, MINT paint, MINT interior, no rust, and ran like a champ. It had pearl white paint that was put on by the original owner in 1975, as he didn't like the factory white. At the same time, the original owner had a custom hood bird air-brushed on. The guy I bought it from was the second owner, and he had barely driven it in the 15 years he had owned it. It mostly just sat in a climate controlled garage next to 2 other mint Trans Ams at a cabin he owned in northern Wisconsin.

So I drove it for a few years. Until the motor blew up. It seems someone didn't like the fact that I had a nice car, and decided to pour a gallon of water into my oil. Well, with the motor junk, I pushed the car into storage. And I should have chosen a safer place to store it. At the place I had it, people decided to store stuff ON TOP OF MY CAR! So the paint is all scratched, and dented in places.

Well, about 2 years ago, I decided that enough was enough, so I brought the car back to a safe storage place, and started tearing it apart. At first I just pulled the motor and tranny out. I sent the Motor out to a builder in Elsworth, WI. I told the guy I wanted as much power as he could give me, with only a few restrictions. First, I didn't want to buy new heads, but he could do whatever he wanted with the stock ones. Second, we would be limited as to which intake he could use, because I want the shaker hood to remain functional. And third, I wanted to be able to run on 93 octane.

In the mean time, I ended up buying a townhome, so other things took a back burner. But last winter, I actually brought the car home. As it sat in my garage without a motor sitting in it, I figured that it would be the best time to clean it up from the "frame" up. So I started pulling off panels, until everything forward of the firewall was stripped of. As of this week, the sub-frame, control arms, spindles, and sway bar are at the sand blasters getting cleaned up and primed. I should have them back next week, and the following weekend, a buddy is going to paint them all up.

THEN I can start putting her BACK TOGETHER! My motor builder has been great, and he has actually had my motor at his shop for over 2 years. I check in from time to time, and he just tells me to give him a call a few weeks before I want it. Most of the work is already done on it.

The plan is to get the car running and driving on the road this summer, and then in the next year or two, repaint the outside.

Here how she looked back in '97 (and some skinny nerdy kid standing next to it!)

It'll be dyno'ed before I take it home, so I'll let you all know exactly what it is, but it should be a bit over 400 HP.

Yup. Since this car is a full numbers matching original, I'm going to keep it pretty much original looking. Nothing extreme or too drastic. I'll save that for another car (or maybe a 72 GMC Pickup street truck I'd like to build someday!)

Hey nice ride glad to see another pontiac out of the barn. I love small back windowed cars.

Yeah. That was another reason 74 was the newest one I'd want. In 75 they went to the wrap around rear window. I don't like that as much as the clean look of the squared off rear window and a smooth sail panel.

What cam did you pick out?

I don't remember what the cam profile was... I'll have to ask about that.

What are you going to run for exhaust?

I'm leaning towards Hedman #28150 full length headers connected to a Pypes 2.5" X Pipe full system with the Pypes RacePro CrossFlow muffler:

http://www.pypesexhaust.com/images/sgf70.gif

What gears are in it now?

373s

Are you going to port match the intake to the heads?

I think thats part of the deal I have with the builder. If not, I guess I'm going to be paying extra for that.

I'm also trying to decide between the Performer RPM intake and a Torker II intake. This is going to be a street car, but I'm going to drive it hard.

Yea but then he would also need...

Uh oh.

6 pioneer wedgies in the back window (I have a pair of Pioneer 6x9s installed in the rear deck)

48-68 tree air fresheners. (nope)

Fuzzy dice. (nope)

An old radar detector that doesn’t go off for anything but bank alarms and fast food joints.(nope)

Maxed out air shocks with N50 tires on back that have hit the fenders a few times (err.... It does have airshocks, BUT ONLY BECAUSE THE AFTERMARKET SPRINGS I BOUGHT TO FIX THE ASS DRAGER LOOK SAT EVEN LOWER! They WILL be coming out!)

Bubble gum chewing, hair spray infested blond bimbo riding along and trying to piss him off with her feet up on the dash. (She's a burnette! LOVE YOU HONEY!)

Pioneer super tuner cassette, ampliphier and an equalizer with 40 something control levels. (How about a Pioneer CD Deck?)

A suitcase full of cassette tapes. (nope)

A tire iron sitting under the seat for defense and anti theft system with the name god painted on it. (nope, and LMFAO!!)

***** lights from one end to the other inside and under the car. (Used to have a red light inside the shaker... till it shorted out!)

A gallon of armorall and towels in the trunk. (Towels, yes. ArmorAll... that stays in the garage)

Six pack of condoms in the glove box even if they are never used the thought was there. (I'd have to check. I can't remember on that one!)

A center console full of unpaid tickets. (nope. I paid all mine!)

A dash full of lighted toggle switches to who knows what. (Only one for that red light in the shaker!)

Racing stickers all over the windows. (Just 2!)

Straight pipes. (It did for a while... but it's gonna sound nice when it's done!)

Furry seat covers. (You're killing me! I can one up you... Fuzzy COW PRINT SEAT COVERS! CHECK!)

6-inch chrome steering wheel. (nope)

Playboy bunnies stickers on the insides of the tail lights. (nope, but GOOD IDEA!)

In my defense, I was 18 when I did that stuff. I'm going for the clean classic look now...

I know most people don’t like the quad but most have never had one that is tuned correctly either. They are outstanding carbs if done right. If you are going for the jet version I would stay with the quad. Just my opinion.

What cam did you pick out?
What are you going to run for exhaust?
What gears are in it now?
Are you going to port match the intake to the heads?
I know I ask a lot of questions? Lol
Ditch the proform and just add msd 6a, 6al or better. The stock HEI is already capable of going beyond the rpm limit you’ll need. If anything just add a spring and weight kit according to whatever cam, gears, tires you’ll be running. Don’t waste your money on a accel super coil. You will so no gain from them. There are better ones if you want to change it. just my thoughts. Everything else looks tasty.

Just got off the phone with my motor guy. We are going to go with the Torker II intake, and it will be port matched. I also think I will add a MDS 6al once I put it in the car. This is a 4 speed car, and I'd really feel a lot better with a good rev limiter!

Ok... I've gotten some more work done!

First, I installed the subframe to the car... after dealing with being sent 2 of the wrong bolts from Global West with my solid bushing kit. (very nice quality on the machined aluminum bushings, btw). They were kind enough to next day air the new bolts to me!

So, this weekend, I'm going to try to (depending on parts availability):
Finish driver side suspension
Get rotors installed with all new seals and wheel bearings
Re-finish my backing plates
Get new calipers and pads installed
Clean up the original brake line and install
Either clean up original steering and install, or buy all new tie rod ends (VERY PRICEY!!).
Install sway bar with new bushings and end links. If I get all that done, I'll consider it a very good weekend!

Well here's how the weekend worked out:

Finish driver side suspension DONE
Get rotors installed with all new seals and wheel bearings DONE
Re-finish my backing plates DONE
Get new calipers and pads installed NEW CALIPERS ON ORDER
Clean up the original brake line and install 1/2 DONE
Either clean up original steering and install, or buy all new tie rod ends (VERY PRICEY!!). 1/2 DONE. Steering box cleaned up and painted.

Install sway bar with new bushings and end links. NOT DONE AT ALL
After looking at my steering linkage, all the joints are pretty good, but all the rubber is shot. Guess that happens to rubber after 34 years... So I'm going to bite the bullet and get all new tie rod ends, idler arm, and center link.

I'm also going to order up a new brake booster today. My original works fine, but the gold cad. plating is totally oxidized. A new one should really make the whole engine bay pop.

This weekend we are also going to paint the firewall. That should really make things look a lot better.

Once that's dry, I have a brand new gold cad brake booster that should be here Friday, along with all new steering linkage!

Short list of stuff I need before I can install the motor:

Figure out motor mounts. Stock mounts didn't hold up to the stock motor and a 4 speed. I think I'm going to have to modify a set of poly mounts to fit...
Order a clutch: I'm pretty sure I'm going with a Centerforce Dual-Friction.
Order a tranny mount.
Drop the gas tank, clean it, and replace old rubber lines.
Clean up the master cylinder and proportioning valve, and hook up all the brake lines.
Finish installing the steering linkage.I'm sure there is more, but that's all I can think of off the top of my head...

Probably not this summer. I want to wait until I repaint the body before I take it to any shows. For this summer I'm focusing on getting it running and driving, and restoring from the inside out. Luckily the interior is basically mint, so the only thing I'll have left is going to be freshening up the paint.

Well, after being sick as hell ALL WEEK, I felt good enough to do a little more wrenchin on the TA.

I did end up getting the firewall painted last weekend, but that was about it. This weekend, I dropped the gas tank (it was still full from 4-5 years ago) drained that, pressure washed the outside, put a new pick up sock in it, new rubber hose sections, cleaned up the straps, and bolted it back in.

Also got the windshield wiper motor and linkage all hooked back up, the grate in the cowl cleaned up and re-installed, and the fresh air vent door cleaned up and bolted back in.

Got the new brake booster and master cylinder together and bolted on, stripped and repainted the proportioning valve, and started hooking up brake lines.

And then the most fun was bolting on the motor mount plates into a fully boxed frame. AN hour later, all six bolts were tight.

It's getting close... I have the clutch and headers on order, the motor mounts are getting ordered tonight, and the motor is supposed to be done this week!

I'm really hoping to have the engine installed and running by the end of March!

Oh, and it's sitting on it's wheels again for the first time in a year!

Refinished the core support over the weekend, and got the steering all hooked up last night.

I'm supposed to pick my motor up tonight, but I got a call from my builder. He is doing final assembly, and just realized that the Jet Quadrajet won't bolt on to the Torker II intake that he has prepared. So the option is to bolt on a Holley 750 doublepumper, or order a Performer RPM, and use the Jet carb.

His opinion was that the Holley / Torker II combo would give me more power in the end, and I should be able to still pick it up tonight, so I told him to go for it.

I hope I made the right choice.

The dyno testing the motor got was basically a break-in, and a quick "let's get it running nice" tune.

Once I get it in the car, I'm going to take it to a dyno, and really tweak it until I get all this motor is capable of.

Installed the flywheel and clutch
Bolted on the tranny
Installed the motor and tranny in the car
Installed the headers
Got all the engine brackets figured out, and installed
Got the alternator and power steering pump bolted on, with belts
Re-wrapped the entire engine wiring harness
Figured out 90% of the plugs in the harness
Replaced the distributor cap I wrecked when installing the motor
Bought new MSD plug wires
Bolted on the core support and bumper brackets

So, hopefully I can get it running in the car by next weekend. I still need my carb, which should be here this week, a pivot stud for my clutch linkage, the upper radiator hose, a new thermostat housing, a new fuel pump, and a battery, and it should be set!

They are pretty dry-rotted... so I'm going to take them off, ONE LAYER AT A TIME! hehehe

So, I've got the engine wire harness all figured out, cleaned up, and installed. The starter is in. Just got a new radiator for it, so that will be ready to go for the weekend. The shifter linkage is cleaned up and bolted on.

I'm picking my carb up tomorrow afternoon. After that, it'll be ready to fire for the weekend! Maybe even by Friday night!

I'm going to take tomorrow night to go thru everything and make sure all the bolts are tight, and everything is where it's supposed to be.

So this weekend was a big weekend.

Friday night, I picked up the carb in Ellsworth. We got it installed on a carb stud kit, rigged up the fuel lines, installed the radiator, tightened all the belts, filled her with gas, rigged up the battery, and fired her up!

Thats right! After 6 years, the car is running again!

Saturday was spent installing a new fuel feed line (the first one leaked!), getting the fenders bolted on, the hood installed, crimping up new plug wires, finding a permanent hookup for the choke, and a bunch of other odds and ends. Sunday I got the seats in, and messed with the shifter linkage.

Some pics:

This is from Saturday morning. You can see the temp plug wires, the temp fuel line, the leaky fuel feed line, and radiator zip-tied in place!

Saturday night: You can see the nice new MSD plug wires, as well as the new fuel feed lines, the trimmed heater lines, and passenger inner fender installed.

And some pics from tonight.

I got the other inner fender installed, the front wiring harness installed, the clutch "Z-bar pivot stud" installed, the clutch linkage adjusted, radiator installed with shroud, clutch fan bolted in, nose cone installed and aligned.

Under the hood, it's basically done!
