Just wondering what kind of starter some of you run and where did you get it and how much I am probably going to get a starter from a friend’s work where they rebuild them. My friends boss said I should get a starter they make for mud racing its all sealed up and a gear reduction. My friend and I both lost our stock Chevy 350 starters up at mud fest over Memorial Day weekend (they stared by turning really slow until they just wouldn’t work) and I don’t want that to happen again any info is helpful and thanks also my motor is a stack 77 Chevy blazer 350

I once went to a racing school that was put on by a nationally known dirt track driver, he told us he hadn't bought brake pads in over 5 years. Purchased a set of NAPA lifetime pads and when ever they started to get a little glazed he just brought them back with no questions, I asked him how many times he had replaced them and he said dozens........ I was wondering if a guy could get away doing that with U-joints?

I usually grab about 4 or 5 stock starters from the junk yard before each run. I usually go through at least a couple.

Alot depeneds on your motor, a starter may never have any problems on your motor yet take it off and put it on somthing else and you just cant get them to work. It goes back to the old trial and error. But I do prefer high torque starters.

I used to run the expensive high torque starters but they got to be too expensive to replace, now I run a Checker (warrantied) starter and it seems to work just fine.

When I get my starter packed full of mud (chevy). I take it out, pull it apart and go wash it out in whatever standing water I can find. I then add a dab of grease to the the bushings. Works every time. Starters are simple and it only takes about a half hour. Granted it's easy to get at.

I'd check your connections especially the grounds. I mean take them apart and sand them. Even if it's tight it can rust and cause a resistance problem. I've seen dozens of needless parts replaced due to bad grounds or cables. There is a voltage drop test you can do before you rip it apart to check (pm me for my # and I'll tell you how, it's simple. You do need a volt meter)

Don't believe me, ask Twisted Wrench I bet he's seen a few

I run a cheap ebay mini starter and a ford solenoid (to reduce the volt drop in the circut) so far so good Knock Knock

Checker guys don't care about that. The Autolite starters have a lifetime warranty, they'll put it on the bench tester at the store, if it tests bad, they'll give you a new one and tell you to have a nice day.

Another thing: the Autolites also have 24 month roadside service. Which basically means, if it fails on you, autolite will reimburse you for the cost of a tow.

Stop in at the checker at 65 and 242 and I'll sell you one.

That only works when there is someone to pull start you, every time i hit the pit at mudfest i packed my starter, i also burnt up a clutch so im going back to an automatic.

I worked in a starter shop for awhile. hitting them with a hammer is the most destructive thing you can do. it will crack the field magnets then you are screwed.
