I just bought a 83 f-250 with a 6.9L IH deisel, and I think it is running too rich, It goes through fuel like crazy, and smokes like a banchee. Is there an adjustment screw or something, or is it something I have to fix/replace?

I dont know much about the old inderect inject fords, but i have a friend that does, and he said the injection pump can be turned up or down for more or less fuel. What color is it smoking? Do you have any idea on the fuel mileage your getting?

The injector pumps like to go out on them...and the block likes to crack...we are doing cowboy's dad's truck that the head gaskets went out on and possibly the injecotor pump went out on and also think the heads or block is cracked. It had black smoke like ALL the time. Just a heads up on that some issues we have heard from an a ford diesel tech...who told us those are what we are possibly looking at for that one.

I know at least 10 people with 6.9s, and only one has ever had a real problem, he blew a headgasket do to to much boost (from an aftermarket turbo kit) and towing 20,000 pounds. I think these are a very durable engine.

I know I am bumping this post but what was the fix on the engine? Injector pump?

Have the pump timeing checked. Some guys liked to play with the pump timeing to try to get a little more power. I had an 85 6.9 that would go through a couple sets of glow plugs a year and the guy I got it from could never figure out why. Turned out the pump timeing was advanced about 3-4 degrees. set the timeing back to spec and drove it 5 more years without replaceing the glow plugs again. To your problem, if the pump timeing is retarded, it will be down on power, smoke excesively and get poor mileage. Mine, f-250 4x4 /w/ 12.5-33's got 18 mpg just for referance.

nah, this guy is just too good for the site and left a while ago all butt hurt and mumbling about spark plugs or something. really too bad as many of us were following his quest for some crazy weird ars cantilever suspension deal he was working on.
